I’m currently taking a digital painting class through Syn Studio with Nino Vecia, and it’s been a really refreshing experience.
One week was all grayscale. The next, we revisited those same paintings and brought in color based on notes. Grayscale versions are below, color above, with the photo reference on the left.
This class has been making me think more carefully about color and value, and it’s coming at the right time. My very first painting class was back in college, when I had very little art experience and honestly struggled through most of it. I wasn’t good—but I was encouraged to try anyway.
Looking back now, I’m realizing that a lot of what I was being taught back then just didn’t have anywhere to land yet. Years later, with more experience (and a better mindset), those ideas are finally starting to click.
